Clinical Significance of Mesenteric Lymph Node in Pain Group and Non-pain Group Children
Kim Keum-Won

Lee Hee-Jung
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of mesenteric lymph node in children by using sonography (US). Author prospectively studied the abdominal US of 142 children (74 boys and 68 girls; mean age 6 years 5 months) during one year. The investigated children were divided into the abdominal pain (91) and non-pain (51) groups. Author recorded the number of lymph nodes which were larger than 1cm in length. Author reviewed the medical records of the patients focusing on the final clinical diagnosis and WBC counts within 2 days of US. Author analyzed the statistical significance of difference in the numbers of enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes between he pain and non-pain groups, and evaluated a correlation between the number of mesenteric lymph nodes and WBC counts. No significant difference in mean number of mesenteric lymph nodes was present between the pain (3.0) and nonpain (4.0) groups. The infectious disease (4.96) revealed significantly increased numbers of mesenteric lymph nodes than the non-infectious disease (2.46). A significant correlation was present between the number of mesenteric lymph nodes and WBC couns. Numbers of mesenteric lymph nodes in abdominal US has poor correlation to presence or absence of abdominal pain in children. Number of mesenteric lymph nodes had a tendency to be more frequent and increasing in patients with leukocytosis.
